Well, February didn’t end the way we wanted but there is nothing wrong with the 9-2-1-1 record the Cyclones posted in the month. As things currently stand the ‘Clones are 36-19-1-2 which is good to the top spot in the Division and 2nd in the Conference. The Boys will have 2 big game against Conference leaders South Carolina coming up on their southern road trip. The Cyclones trail the Stingrays by 6 points but have 3 games in hand. Overall this road trip south will give Chuck a very good indication of just where the team stands with games against Charlotte, South Carolina and Gwinnett team that is fighting for a playoff birth. A 4-0 trip would be great but I think 3-1 would have to be considered a success.

Early March is always an exciting time for hockey fans. The NHL trade deadline is March 3rd, the AHL will announce Clear Day Rosters on March 10th, and the ECHL trade deadline is March 12th. While the NHL trade deadline usually doesn’t have much of an effect at the ECHL level, but it could be of significant importance for the Cyclones this season. The rumor mill has been working overdrive with talk of Montreal’s goal tending situation and Montreal’s desire to move either Carey Price or Jaroslav Halak. Should either one of the two be dealt at the deadline it would likely mean Robert Mayer finishing the year in Hamilton, forcing Chuck to make a move for another capable goalie or forcing Jeremy Smith carry the load the remainder of the season. The good news is Robert Mayer will be joining the team Wednesday in Charlotte which could be an indicator that neither Halak or Price are definitively being traded. We won’t know for sure until Wednesday.

The AHL Clear Day has a bit more bearing on the ECHL. Only players on an AHL team’s Clear Day Roster is eligible to play for that team for the remainder of the AHL season and the Calder Cup playoffs, unless emergency situations occur due to player recalls, injuries or suspensions. When Milwaukee and Hamilton release their respective Clear Day Rosters Chuck will have a pretty good idea of who will be available to him for the stretch run and into the playoffs.

Chuck hasn’t ruled out making any personnel changes by the March 12th ECHL trade deadline. He won’t tip his hand, but says there are needs that he and Dean have identified. A trade would be a way to address those needs but in order to make a deal there has to be a willing partner. We’ll have to wait and see if one materializes.

If Chuck doesn’t have the opportunity to pull the trigger on a trade there is still time to address the holes in the roster. Later in March Chuck will have the opportunity to add College players or players from Major Junior once their seasons have ended. The ‘Clones have had success with this in the past adding players such as Billy Irish-Baker, Kyle Bushee, Felix Petit and Matt Pierce. Apparently Chuck has Dwayne Zinger reviewing film of College and Junior players and at a previous Coach’s Show Chuck mentioned having a list of prospective College and Junior players that is several pages long.

The Cyclones roster currently has 12 forwards and 10 defensemen so there are options for making a trade deal. The questions that need to be answered are; what are the needs Chuck feels need to be addressed and who is Chuck willing to deal. Personally, I would like to see the addition of a true puck distributing forward. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Chuck package up a few players and/or futures if the right player was available. Trades can often strike a nerve with fans as players who are fan favorites can be dealt, but it’s Chuck’s job to make the team better and history indicates that he more often than not makes good moves.

Regardless of what happens the next two weeks will be fun to keep track of.

The All Star week is over and the Boys return to action with a home and home against Kalamazoo which begins tonight in Kalamazoo. The Cyclones will play 3 games in 4 nights to kick off a 9 day stretch that sees them play 6 games; trips to Kalamazoo bookends the stretch.  I hope the week off allowed everyone to heal up and get rested.

-Speaking of the All Star Game, Matt Pierce and Jeremy Smith represented the club well on the ice and I’m sure Bob did a great job as well.

Now I’m gonna take my own advice and get to the point of today’s blog.

One thing jumps out at me when I  look at the standings for the Division and Conference; the Cyclones rarely take games to overtime. Toledo has 4 points from getting games to overtime and then losing, Kalamazoo has 5 points, South Carolina has 6 and Reading has 4. The Cyclones have managed just 1 point from an overtime loss.

Now there are a couple ways to look at this. First off, the Boys have gone to OT or shootouts 5 times this season and have won 4 of them so in that regard, the lack of OT loses is not a concern. However, if I look at it from the loss column perspective, it’s a different story. As I pointed out in my last entry the Cyclones have been involved in a number of close games that were loses; of Their 14 regulation loses, 9 have been by 1 goal or 2 goals (with the extra goal being of the late empty net variety). That, in my opinion is leaving points on the table.

During the 2007-2008 season, the Cyclones went down to the very last game in a battle with Texas Wildcatters for the Brabham Cup. That season the Cyclones finished tied with Texas in points and won the Cup based on having 3 more wins than Texas. The difference, and the reason Texas was even in the running for the Brabham Cup, was in the loss column. That season the Cyclones lost 12 games in regulation, and 5 in OT or shoot outs. Texas on the other hand only lost 9 games in regulation and took 11 to OT or shoot outs before losing. Yes,  the Cyclones, went on to win the Kelly Cup that season and Texas was bounced my South Carolina, but this year making the playoffs will be more difficult, with more teams competing for the same 8 spots, not to mention the advantage of home ice for a round or two that comes with being a Division winner.

The standings right now are tight. In the North Division there is only a 5 point difference between the 1st and last place teams. In the Conference, South Carolina has jumped out to a sizable lead, but there is just a 5 point difference between the 2nd and 8th place teams. If the Cyclones had been able to take half of their 14 regulation loses to OT before losing they could be sitting on top of the Division with 56 points and trailing South Carolina by 8 points with 4 games in hand.

Unfortunately all of that is in the past. Going forward it will become increasingly more important to take points at every opportunity. If the Cyclones can manage to keep to Their winning ways but also turn regulation loses into OTL’s or SOL’s, there is no reason to think they can’t make a run at not only the top of the Division and Conference, but the League as well.

When Malcolm Cameron brought his Florida Everblades squad to Cincinnati, i’m sure he had visions of finishing off their 7 game roadtrip through the North Division with a winning record. It wasn’t to be as the Cyclones took Friday’s game 2-1 in a shootout and then locked the Everblades down on Saturday with a 3-0 win to send the ‘Blades home with a 3-3-1 record. I’m sure the warm and sunny weather in Florida will offer some consolation.

-The 2 wins keep the Cyclones just a point behind Kalamazoo for the Division lead (the K-wings currently have 1 game in hand on the ‘Clones) and moves them to 6th in the Conference with 27 points.

-Florida brought in a couple of top notch goalies in Barry Brust, who got saddled with a shootout loss, and Mike Morrison, who earned his loss in regulation. The Cyclones got a boost from the AHL when the Milwaukee Admirals decided to call-up Jeremy Smith and send Mark Dekanich down for the weekend. Dekanich’s stellar play was not doubt a catalyst for the weekends results. It was good to see an AHL caliber goalie in town again, hopefully watching what it takes to perform at that at that level will be a good motivator for Robert Mayer. And speaking of Brust, what was with the “twitch” that was going on with his stick hand.

-The Cyclones were without the services of Matt Pierce for the weekend. He was called up along with Smith, but was promptly “McElroyed” by the Admirals. At least the Ads were kind enough to send him back.

-Reid Cashman was recalled by Milwaukee yesterday. Hopefully he won’t get “McElroyed” and actually get to play this time.

-As Dannielle pointed out the Penalty Kill is still going strong. It even got back to it’s early season form killing off 8 0f 8 short handed situations against a talented Florida team

-Dwayne Zinger? The horse is still dead and I’m still beating it. He HAS to get better ASAP.

-The ‘Clones played two of their more physical games against Florida and I think it took them by surprise. It was good to see the Boys finishing their “bumps” in big ways but not skating out of position to do so.

Of cours immediately after I write an update there is breaking news out of Nashville/Milwaukee that directly affects the Cyclones.

Cyclones net minder Jeremy Smith and leading scorer Matt Pierce have been called up to Milwaukee. In return the Admirals have sent the Cyclones goal tender Mark Dekanich.

Robert Mayer has been playing well as of late but the addition of Dekanich should help the Cyclones in this weekends series if he gets the starting nod this Friday or Saturday.

The loss of Matt Pierce would have had me worried a few weeks ago, but after seeing the team persevere in the absence of Jimmy Kilpatrick, Mark Voakes and Chris Mueller, I feel confident that Chuck and the Boys will find a way to compete. My main concern is the chemistry of the Sproat/Robinson line. Pierce had been the other winger and the three of them worked together amazingly well.

NHL.com has a nice writeup on rookie Matt Pierce‘s fishing habits, and how he’s coming into his own in his first pro season.

A crowd of 10,920 (second largest in team regular season history) was on hand last night to watch the Cyclones’ special teams overcome the Tolledo Walleye. The Cyclones threw two powerplay goals and a shorthanded empty netter up with a couple even strength goals to bring home the game 5-2. While Robert Mayer was only tested 22 times by the Walleye, he came up with some unbelievable acrobatic stops with his legpads. The defense came up big as well in the third period to help him out with Toledo turning on the burners late.

Notes:
– Toledo was 0/5 on the Power Play. The Cyclones are now 34/34 on the PK though eight games. Chuck Weber’s special teams philosophy is that if you’re > 110%, you’re in pretty good shape. With the PK at 100%, the power play’s 20% showing puts the team well over his goal.
– The shorthanded empty net goal was a 6 on 4 for Toledo. For a two-man advantage, there was little dominance on that PP. The Cyclones controlled the puck for a majority of it.
– Captain Ehgoetz and Reid Cashman both netted their first goals of the season.
– Matt Pierce’s game winning goal was his seventh goal of the season. He’s third in the league behind Ryan Kinasewich of Utah and Chanse Fitzpatrick of Elmira.
– The Cyclones have only committed 111 PIM, which is by far the league’s lowest. This is a Chuck Weber team right here.

It appears that Milwaukee has finally gotten around to sending us Jeremy Smith, but nothing official from the team yet.

Secondly, if you’re planning on heading down to USBA for tonight’s preseason tilt against the Toledo Walleye, here are the guys you definitely won’t see in action: Jonathan Duchesneau, Kenton Dulle, Adam Krug, Kirk Medernach, and Shawn Fensel. Duchesneau, Dulle Krug and Medernach were released and Fensel was suspended.

I had a chance to check out the public training camp sessions and was impressed with the size and speed of the squad. Chuck has some tough decisions to make regarding who will stay and who will go; just about any of the guys who may not make the team can play at this level and are guys we would have welcomed with open arms last January.

I’ll be updating later with my impressions of tonight’s game later tonight.
