Going to the ‘Zoo

The Cyclones find themselves in Kalamazoo this weekend where they’ll play the North Division leading K-wings for the first time this season. The K-wings are putting up goals at a prolific rate, but I’m not sure if they’ve seen a team that plays the type of team defense that the Cyclones are capable of.

It will be interesting to watch the special teams this weekend. Can the Cyclones get the PK unit back on track after giving up 3 goals on 5 chances to Toledo? And can the the PP unit continue it’s improvement against the K-wings PK which, from the numbers, is good but not great?

In a player exchange with Milwaukee, the ‘Clones well have the services of veteran defenseman Jason Josza, but will be without Reid Cashman. It’s been a while since we’ve had a chance to see Josza play, but from what I remember he’s solid and has a stabilizing presence in the defensive zone. Reid will be missed, especially on the PP.

The weekend should also be Ryan Del Monte’s first games for the Cyclones after being acquired from Johnstown; the ‘Clones sending Bryan Marshall to the Chiefs in the deal. The Cyclones lost some pure offense in the deal but gained some “chippiness” in Del Monte, which is sorely missing in the absence of Hans Benson. Del Monte in his second season has some AHL experience, and is a bit more proven at this level of hockey. I have to say advantage Cyclones in this deal.

In other transactions, Kevin Roeder has been activated off IR and will be available. Adam Henrich has been placed on 3-day IR. Henrich looked impressive in his first game with Cyclones, especially given that he spent most of the day on an airplane, has not played since. One thing to keep in mind is that IR is retro active so the 3 days could have started earlier in the week.

I always like game days; Chuck often times has some kind of roster move up his sleeve as a surprise. I wonder what he’ll throw the K-wings way tonight.

It will also be interesting to see who the K-wings use in goal. Julien Ellis has been returned to the the team and according to the AHL’s transaction page Ryan Nie has been released from his PTO with Portland.

Also, no news on the return of Robert Mayer at the this point. As Dannielle mentioned earlier, he’s up in Hamilton playing back up while Bulldog’s goalie Curtis Sanford is home with his wife, who is expecting at any moment.
